Zion National Park, UT: Hiking Information

Easy

If you have more time than just a quick drive through (or a ride on the shuttles where they are present), you might want to stop and do a little hiking. Always be prepared and take some water with you.

Moderate

Many trails are longer, harder and may have more drop offs. When hiking these you may want to check with the visitor center on current conditions. These hikes are one to two hours long.

Strenuous

These trails are moderate to strenuous hikes. They can be very steep and have narrow canyons. Each of these takes three to four hours (or more). It is best to take your time climbing and to watch your step.

Easy

Canyon Overlook

Miles: 1 mile (1.6 km) round trip

This moderate hike starts just after the exit from the Zion Tunnel. The shuttles do not run to this hike. This is a rocky and mostly fenced hike to a great canyon view. It is not recommended that this hike be done during the day due to the heat, but rather early in the morning or late at night . This hike has a great view of the lower Zion Canyon. The total mileage for the Canyon Overlook is 1 mile (1.6 km) round trip. There are long drop-offs on this trail.

Lower Emerald Pools

Miles: 1.2 miles (1.9 km) round trip

This hike starts from the Zion Lodge shuttle stop. It is a short easy paved hike to a small pools and waterfalls from the middle pools. Swimming, wading or any water activities are not allowed in the Emerald Pools. The total mileage for the Lower Emerald Pools is 1.2 miles (1.9 km) round trip. There are only minor drop-offs on this trail.

The Grotto Trail

Miles: 1 mile (1.6 km) round trip and .5 miles ( .8 km) o

This hike can be started at the Zion Lodge or the Grotto shuttle stop. It is a very easy trail that goes between the Grotto and the Zion Lodge. The trail offers a good view of the canyon walls from the valley floor. This trail is possible to hike one way or round trip. Total mileage for the Grotto Trail is 1 mile (1.6 km) round trip and .5 miles ( .8 km) one way. There are no drop-offs on this trail.

Weeping Rock

Miles: .5 miles (.8 km) round trip

This hike starts from the Zion Lodge shuttle stop. It is a short easy paved hike to a small pools and waterfalls from the middle pools. Swimming, wading or any water activities are not allowed in the Emerald Pools. The total mileage for the Lower Emerald Pools is 1.2 miles (1.9 km) round trip. Middle Emerald Pools

Miles: 2 miles (3.3 km) round trip

This moderate hike starts from the Zion Lodge shuttle stop. It is mostly paved and loops down to the Lower Emerald Pools. Swimming, wading or any water activities are not allowed in the Emerald Pools. The total mileage for the Middle Emerald Pools is 2 miles (3.3 km) round trip. There are long drop-offs on this trail.

River Side Walk

Miles: 2 miles (3.3 km) round trip

This hike starts from the Temple or Sinawava shuttle stop. A paved trail follows the Virgin River along the canyon bottom. This is the last mile of the Zion Narrows. Beautiful hanging gardens can be found along this path. This trail is also accessible to handicapped people. The total mileage for River Side Walk is 2 miles (3.3 km) round trip. There are only minor drop-offs on this trail.

Watchman Trail

Miles: 2 miles (3.3 km) round trip

This moderage hike starts from the Zion Canyon Visitor Center. During the day this hike can get very hot. The Watchman hike takes you to a viewpoint of the lower Zion Canyon, Oak Creek and the town of Springdale. The total mileage for the Watchman is 2 miles (3.3 km) round trip. There are minor drop-offs on this trail.

Strenuous

Angles Landing / Scout Outlook

Miles: 5 miles (8.6 km) round trip

This hike starts from the Grotto shuttle stop. Angles Landing and Scout Outlook is a strenuous hike and you must hike it with caution. This trail is not recommended for people with a fear of heights. On the last .5 miles (.8 km), chains have been added for your protection. Scout Outlook is just before the trail continues off to Angles Landing, and offers a nice view of Weeping Rock. The total mileage for Angles Landing is 5 miles (8.6 km) round trip. There are long drop-offs on this trail
